The Power of StumbleUpon
Ah! The power of Stumbleupon! When you look at the statistics its easy to see the good results of having a reader positively stumble a post. Recently one of my readers submitted a post (Deadliest Catch Memorial Day Marathon) to stumbleupon, and although I knew it was a good thing if someone stumbled a post, I really had no idea just how big of an impact it can make. So for the reader that enjoyed and stumbled this post in particular, I say thank you, and hope you and other readers will submit articles they like to stumbleupon in the future. But for those out there that don’t know what stumbleupon is, or what it is about, lets dive into that first.
Stumbleupon (www.stumbleupon.com) is a free tool that embeds itself into your browser and allows you to surf the web at random with a click of the mouse. The cool thing about it is, it gives you the ability to tell it which webpages you like, and which ones you don’t, and based on that, when you click the “Stumble” button, it will choose a webpage that it thinks you might like and enjoy. So basically it learns your web browsing tastes and upon the click of a button sends you randomly to pages that more than likely will be right up your alley. Pretty cool deal if you ask me, and I personally have already found a lot of cool sites just from stumbling around the internet.
The cool thing for us bloggers is when your page gets the thumbs up. It goes into their system and based on that particular page, might show up at random for users whose interests might fall in line with the post on your site.
Okay so you’re ready for some numbers, I know. Before I throw them out there, let me just give you a little background on the site if you are new around here. The site has been around for a little over a month now, and I’m kind of learning as I go, and picking up a little traffic here or there. In all honesty though, it hasn’t been too much, but at the same time I haven’t been advertising either. I personally just wanted to wait until the site design was done (hopefully coming soon) and a good amount of posts had been made before kicking it into gear and trying to get my site out there.
So all that said, lets get to the numbers. The site throughout the month had steadily gained a few daily visitors and was probably averaging a good 4-5 unique visitors a day. I know right? But hey, I’m just starting out here. The unique visitors high for the site on a single day was 7. The most page views for a single day was 52. I’ll be honest here as well, most of those were probably me. I’m my biggest fan, what can I say? The previous high for views on a single article was the coldplay post with 35 views, followed by the Indiana Jones post with 20. Again, most of those 35 were probably me, and again, what can I say, I love Coldplay and kept wanting to hear the new songs on that post.
So what kind of traffic did stumbleupon bring me? On May 26, the day of the Deadliest Catch marathon post, I had a whopping 206 unique visitors, up from a previous high of 7. I had a whopping total of 292 pageviews, up from a previous high of 52, and the deadliest catch page received a whopping 210 pageviews, blowing Colplays previous high of 35 out of the water. Pretty startling numbers in comparison to normal traffic.
I guess the big question is, how many of those liked what they saw, and will they check back in the future? I guess time will tell on that one, but its exciting to get that much exposure so quickly nonetheless. If it brought even one more regular reader to the site, I’d be thrilled. Stumbleupon is a really cool tool, and I personally am using it more all the time to discover new sites, and to help others find sites that I enjoy. The power of Stumbleupon is huge, and hopefully it continues to help people discover new and cool sites as I hope some of those 206 did on Monday.

I used stumbleupon for a few years before a became a blogger and I had no idea that it meant anything to anyone else but me if I clicked thumbs up, thumbs down or no thumb at all when I used it. I just used it as a way of saving sites, which it partially is, but didn’t think about rewarding the site owner for a great site.

The affects of Stumbleupon can be great. I started a new blog a few weeks ago and someone stumbled the post. It brought almost 5000 visitors to the blog! I was in shock!
Since then I have written about 4 posts, 2 of which have gained about 500 each from stumbles.
Sadly most of this traffic withers away, but if you can keep one or two readers it is worthwhile.
