Hypermiling…a New Frontier. 100mgp? Check.

113.9 MGP? Are you serious? I’d kill for 113.9mpg, but so called “Hypermilers” experience this or even better fuel effeciency on an everday basis. Over at CleanMPG, fuel efficiency enthusiasts gather and discuss ways to better fuel efficiency and swap success stories and tips. The picture above is just one of many people who have been successfull at squeezing the absolute most out of the already fuel efficient hybrid vehicles. So what exactly is “Hypermiling?”

http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1510 will explain the ins and outs of being a hypermiler. These guys have taken the effort of trying to get more from their cars, and turned it into a finely tuned art. I personally have been in hot pursuit of trying to better my 16.5mpg, and recently I managed a solid 20.5mpg by using different tactics. So what did I do to improve 4mpg? Well, not a whole lot of things, but mostly I try to never go over 45, luckily the one highway I use isn’t well populated. I don’t use the A/C anymore, I lowered my tailgate to reduce drag, I keep my windows as closed as tolerable, I’m very easy on and off the brake and accelerator, and I’ve also been doing some coasting, I coasted a full in town mile yesterday on the way home, it was sweet.

I wish I could afford a hybrid and really get into the whole hypermiling thing, but for now my gas guzzling pickup is getting a little better mpg, and hopefully after I can get enough scratch for an oil change and a tuneup it will be better.

Has anyone ever heard of hypermiling? I never had before, and I thought it was super interesting and fascinating just what you can get out of your vehicle vs the EPA rating for the vehicle.

  1. I have heard of these people that manage to get 100+ mpg, but never really looked into it. I’ll have to dig deeper into this phenomenon to see what I can do. I’m getting 36mpg in my Hyundai Accent currently. Unfortunately, I live in a hilly area and have to take I-25 to work which is always busy.

  2. I’m sure even despite the conditions you can do things to improve your mpg. Simple things that might gain you 5-10mpg. My truck is 6 years old, needs and oil change, belt changes, and a tuneup, and even then I managed to get another 4mpg out of it, which was basically 25% more miles on a tank of gas. Not bad.
