Federer vs Nadal: Possibly the Greastest Match Ever
In a finals match that lasted 4 hours and 48 minutes, the longest ever mens final in Wimbledon history, Nadal and Federer battled throughout the 5 set match, giving us possibly the greatest tennis match ever played. The match also had to deal with several rain delays, pushing this match’s finishing point to near darkness. Roger Federer, the 5 time running Champ was going for a feat not seen since 1886, 6 consecutive Wimbledon titles. Nadal was looking to really solidify himself as an all around great player, and not just the guy who has Federers number on the clay.
Nadal jumped out to an oustanding 2 set lead taking them both 6-4. Thats when Federer really tightened up the action and took the next two sets 7-6, and the final set lived up the to the rest of the match as Nadal battled his way to a 9-7 victory. 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7.
The match literally lasted from this morning until near 4pm for us in the US. Nearly 5 hours of playing time, plus the rain delays really made this an all day event. The sport of Tennis couldn’t ask for anything better than they got today as their premier event showcased the worlds best players battling it out for five sets. Both players made seemingly impossible shots over and over, and the amazing thing was the farther the match went on, the more remarkable plays they were each making. Its as if they both continued to dig deeper and deeper inside themselves pulling out everything they possibly had, and in the end, Nadal put an end the streak of 5 consecutive Wimbledon titles for the Worlds #1 Player Roger Federer.
After the match Federer was gracious, conducted himself with class, and as Nadal Completed a victory lap, Federer joined him, circling the court opposite of Nadal. To me it was a show of respect to the match he just had with Nadal, and a touch of class by circling opposite of Nadal, letting him have the full spotlight.
Who knows if its the greatest match ever, but if you didn’t see it, you defintately missed out of one of the most competetive, drama filled, and entertaining championship matches ever played.
