Come on down to Lake Pappagiorgio…

Welcome my friends, to Lake Pappagiorgio! aka my backyard! Yeah, crazy right? Well, let me give you a little background here. I had my house built in the fall of ‘06 and moved in December ‘06. Now my house came with a 1 year warranty, but my backyard didn’t used to hold this much water. It might have held a little in the middle, and would go away after a few days, but not like this. As you can see, thats not just a little water, thats damn near water I could drown in!

So anyway, on to present day. How did this happen you ask? How did I go from a little bit of water, to freakin’ Lake Pappagiorgio you ask? Well let me tell you. As I said above, I had my house built, meaning I live in a new development. Aha! Now your starting to figure things out aren’t you? Well a few months back the house they recently built next door, sold, and shortly thereafter there were people doing construction type stuff in their backyard, tearing up part of mine. See, what they were doing was fixing their drainage, and in the process, once they were done, they had to re-sod the part of my yard that they tore up. So not only did the sod get layed uneven to the rest of my backyard, but also their yard now drains into mine. Awesome. So what to do?

Well I have spoken with them about it and the Operations Manager came out to take a look. I told him what happened, and he looked over the fence into both neighbors yards (which looked amazing perfect), basically concluding that both yards are draining into mine, and on top of that my yard has no conceivable drainage system for the backyard. Amazing. Oh, and I forgot to mention how impossible it is to mow, and when he came out the grass was like 4 feet high. Anyway, they came out a few days later taking some line of site readings (I think) and had mowed as much of the backyard as they could. That’s the last I heard, so far. But thats a pretty good sign something was going to get done.

So what’s the story behind the picture? I mean, the story behind the actual picture itself, not the situation. Well last Saturday (2 days after they mowed and took readings), I got up early, made a post on this very blog, and ventured out to get the rest of that backyard mowed, standing water or not. The funny thing is, it wasn’t supposed to rain this weekend, but when I got the mower out, there were daunting clouds all over the sky. So I got out there and moved the rest of it, tilting through the water and all. Just as I was finishing up, it started to sprinkle, so I headed toward the garage. From the time I left the backyard to the time I went into the garage it had started pouring rain. So I closed the garage door and headed in, and in that short period of time it had started to hail like crazy, i mean crazy, my house sounded like it was in the middle of Bastone during WWII. So I go to the front door to smoke a cig and enjoy the show. The hail covered the grass so much it looked like snow, or ice covered snow, or something like that anyway. When I was done with my smoke, and the rain had settled down, I went to look out the back door, and omg Lake Pappagiorgio! I just had to go get my phone to snap a pic. Totally insane. The crazy part is, the whole thing lasted only about 5 minutes. That much water in a mere 5 minutes. My yard still has not totally drained or soaked into the ground.

Here are all three pics I snapped. Enjoy.

See that little boat below? Between the chair and beer bottle? Yeah, thats right!

  2. Sweet. I have one of those too!!!

Are you on a slab or do you have a basement? Here in Iowa, many have the same lake, only duplicated in their basement.

  3. @ Cuzzy: Exactly. I have the biggest backyard in the neighborhood. It would be nice to actually use it.

@ BigPappa: Thanks for stopping by BigPappa! Where I live there aren’t many basements. I guess has something to do with the ground here or something. So I’m lucky there. If I did have a basement and it was causing flooding, I’d be SCREAMING at the top of my lungs to get it fixed.

  4. Found you on Bloggrrl’s comments. If figured that anyone with “pappa” in their name, they couldn’t be half bad.
